Following is a poem by German theologian Martin Niemoller, whom the Nazis put in prison. I learned various versions of this when I was in seminary.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out
— Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out
– Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out
— Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me
–and there was no one left to speak for me.

I would add that those who do not study history and relate it to our time, may repeat it. "Perilous optimism," as author Richard Heinberg described in his book "The Party Is Over," is dangerous. A better strategy is to continue working for the good, and become prepared for the not-so-good.
