View Full Version : Help Congressman Huffman with his "premature evaluation" problem!
Remember a few months ago when Marin county area Congressman Jared Huffman announced that he and several other Democratic super-delegates had already pledged their delegate votes to Hillary Clinton? They had deduced she could beat Trump in the general election. Turns out he and his compadres were dead wrong -- it's Sanders who beats Trump!
In addition, these people are *delegates*; their job is to implement the expressed will of the people they represent, not their own goofy notions. Here's a Moveon.org online petition addressing exactly the latter point. It was started by Michael Aguilar of Fallbrook, CA and it says:
"Let the voters decide. Pledge to support the candidate who gets the most pledged delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention."

In case you're not keeping up with the delegate vote totals, it's almost for certain that Hillary Clinton will arrive at the convention with more pledged delegates than Bernie Sanders. The Sanders campaign has switched their focus to advocating that Superdelegates vote for him, rather than the person who has the most pledged delegates. So, if you're a Sanders supporter, your petition runs counter to the only strategy for Sanders to become the nominee.

If California goes for Sanders, and it just might, then the delegates need to do their thing accordingly. The point of the petition is to get away from the "premature pledging" and wait until after the election -- when the voters have spoken.
The one thing that the Republicans have done right in this election cycle is to do away with the "super-delegates" to make their process more reflective of the will of the voters. Alas that has totally backfired for them as it has become a runaway train for Trump.
Also, do not discount the idea of a brokered Democratic convention. Just because one candidate has more delegates than the another does NOT mean an automatic win.

super delegates were put in place after Mc Govern took only one 1 state ( presidential election '72, worked for him), & Carter (worked on his election as well), our best x.president, but pretty powerless as president.
it was to avoid similar perceived failures. (Mc Govern's candidacy changed the exit poll reporting, as those of us in western states were told Nixon was the projected victor, before we left our homes to canvass for our candidate).
seems working on senate seats for more progressive candidates & house members makes more sense.
difficult in an area so large, to get people to move beyond huffman.
note, that Rove & America's Rising have given over $5 million to buy ads for Sanders. (this is not $ he asked for, via superpac, so the pac can decide).
they gave the $5 million because they want Sanders as the "choice of the Republican party". creepy. they believe Sanders is easier to defeat. (the money is for attack ads on Clinton).

I assume that's the point of the petition.
Clinton has a big lead in California, but even if things change and Sanders wins, Clinton will still arrive at the convention with a big lead in pledged delegates. So this petition runs contrary to your desire to see Sanders nominated.
If California goes for Sanders, ...

Out of sincere curiosity, as I'm a bit behind the times: What has Rep. Huffman done to warrant our moving beyond him, besides endorsing Secty Clinton?

Or maybe my desire is to see actual democracy in the (so-called) Democratic Party, in addition to Sanders getting the nomination.
My other desire is to see the spinally-challended Mr. Huffman and everybody like him not in elected office. It would seem that category includes about 90% of people calling themselves Democrats.

As it is no longer 1971, and the world is a much different (and in many ways better) place, it is seriously time to terminate the paternalistic super-delegate program.

Or not. The "elitist" corporatist portion of the Republican party that hires Rove et. al. really, really does not like Trump and they are actively trying to keep him from being the nominee. Remember that anti-Trump speech Mitt Romney gave a few weeks ago? It is quite possible that they see Sanders as able to beat Trump, which in an election open to independents, he very much is.
