seeking recomendation for book on Hawaii

Looking for something to read about HI ecology, anthro, political development... in the vein of Howard Zinn. Not a guide book - the real back story.

Not quite what you're asking for, but I recommend "Daughters of Fire" by Tom Peek. It's a novel, but it has a lot of historical information, and includes glossary with some common Hawaiian words and how to pronounce them. It was interesting going to one of the parks and hearing the park ranger talk about the history that I had just been reading about in the novel. Unfortunately it's not a small book.
