I've recently seen a request for a hair stylist from a newcomer to the area. This particular request was on Nextdoor.com, but I've also seen a few on WaccoBB. As a "curly haired" girl, I struggled all my life with frizzy, controlling locks. Although I hated my hair, I constantly got compliments on it, from women who paid BIG Bucks to get their hair to look like mine. I wondered "what's wrong with this picture?"

As time went on, I learned that the "straight" haired girls want curls, and the "curly" haired girls want straight, or softer curls, minus the frizz. I surrendered to what I had, not knowing there was an option, up until I was 50! Yes, all those years of hair hating, and I finally had hope!

That came when I began working for a wealthy woman who had a frizzier mop than me. When she came back from the salon, the transformation was unbelievable! I spoke up, and simply said "I'm jealous!" She replied that she would pay for me to go to her hair dresser, who also had curly hair! In that one appointment, I learned so much about how to tame and "control" my hated hair. I walked out of there, with a new soft look, and a feeling of confidence I'd never experienced. I began to try the techniques, and found that I now loved my hair.
At that time (1998) it cost about $60, and I couldn't go every week, but I was learning how to do it myself.

Then I moved to Sonoma County in 2002, and looked for someone who knew how to cut curly hair, since mine was long over due. I'd reverting to cutting my own, but it had no style. I was desperate enough to fork over $100 to a Sebastopol stylist, who worked out of her home. What she did was to excessively straighten my hair with a flat iron. This new look was interesting, but as hard to manage as my curls, which gave me a new empathy for all of you with straight locks. So, back to self managing....by trimming and using the tools I'd learned in Marin. But a trim is not enough, so I asked a friend for help...it wasn't a pretty picture! (twice with 2 different friends)

It wasn't until last year, when I met Karen Dean, who lived here only for a short time. But what a master! I'm sure I mentioned her before. When she moved, I felt sad for the loss of an excellent stylist, but also a friend I connected with, like no other before her. Boo-hoo :tear:

So, a week ago, I resorted to "trimming" my own hair once again. I have little fear of most things, but I dread getting my hair cut by a stranger, even more than speaking in public! I was amazed at what I achieved, even in the back. It's the best self-cut I've ever done. I have cut friend's hair for over 30 years. Seems to come natural to someone with artistic sensibilities and a willingness to try.

But....when I saw this post in Nextdoor, and looked at the Yelp reviews for "Frankie" at Sharp Cuts in Cotati, I knew that I'd be willing to take a risk, and as soon as I need a cut, I'm making an appointment. Take a look, and see the detailed comments about him.
