I need a consultation on options to prevent my long time friend from illegal eviction, which will put him on the street.

Rent is being raised $200, over the $800 he already pays from a $900 SSI check.

The room he's been renting for 7 years is in serious dis-repair with ceiling collapsing, floor lifting, and toilet ajar leaning to one side. Cockroaches and rodents thrive here,

Recently, he was assaulted from behind by another tenant, and is suffering the results of that injury. He couldn't walk, and had to crawl to bathroom. The tenant moved shortly after the incident. Police were called, but the offender refused to open his door.

My friend has been confined to his room, due to this injury, He's unable to take walks, or to go to the meal distribution center.

The main issue is the rent increase, and demand for him to sign a lease. He never signed a lease previously, and isn't mentally competent to do so, in my opinion.

I am his only advocate. Both parents are also mentally ill, and mother is very sick with pneumonia.

He lives in a Motel 6 in San Rafael. He's on medication for Bi-Polar disorder, has diabetes, asthma, congestive heart condition, and painful feet from heel spurs. He doesn't drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.

I will go to Legal Aid in Marin, but his time is limited before he gets evicted.

He will not survive on the street; it's a death sentence. I need advice to prevent this.

Thank you for any advice or referrals.
