This Friday, at 7:30 PM, Many Rivers Books & Tea will be hosting local poet, Pat Nolan, who will be reading from his new book 'Poetry for Sale'. Pat's latest book is a collection of Renga, a form of linked verse that began in Japan. Pat has been a practitioner of Renga for 30 years. Renga are usually written by a group of poets and Pat partners with Keith Abbot, Sandy Berrigan, Gloria Frym, Steven LaVoie, Joen Moore, Maureen Owen, Michael Sowl, and John Veglia, in this collection.
Renga is a literary game of high seriousness valuing cooperation and rewarding intelligence as well as intuition. Its cooperative result, a balance of unpredictable language gestures as insubstantial as smoke but possessed of a palpable humanity, is what is important.
The eleven renga included in 'Poetry For Sale' were written over a period of thirty years by Pat Nolan and his poetic friends. This collection of linked poetry presents a fascinating excursion in comparative literature by a cross-section of exceptional, widely-published American poets.
I want to add a personal note: I think 'Poetry For Sale' is an exceptional collection. Pat's dedication to renga, and his ability to guide other exceptional poets in the fairly complex maneuvers of the renga form is remarkable. The renga are at turns poignant, observationally meticulous, revealing, and spacious. Reading renga is like going on a journey; a journey through time and the seasons as a web of unexpected relationships is brought forth.
Many Rivers is excited to host the premier reading of this local poet's work.
