Dear friends of the rainforests,
32964For years, Armand Marozafy worked tirelessly to protect the rainforests of Madagascar from the illegal timber trade. Not even the country’s national parks are safe from ebony and rosewood traffickers.
Well-connected timber barons and their friends in Madagascar’s corrupt judicial system have now struck back against Armand: in a travesty of justice, he was sentenced to six months in prison for allegedly slandering two businessmen associated with the timber trade in an internal email.
With Armand silenced, the chainsaws continue to wail, felling the remaining ebony and rosewood trees for export to China, where they will be turned into carved luxury furniture.
