TPP: The Global Corporate Coup

30708This secretive trade pact, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which has been quietly under negotiation by corporate lawyers and trade representatives for years, is finally surfacing to public attention as Congress is set to vote for ‘fast track’ authority, which would limit Congress’s role to a simple up-or-down vote. What the American public has seen so far has come from a few scattered leaks. On March 25th, WikiLeaks blew the lid off the deal by releasing the TPP chapter on investment and arbitration. The contents are shockingly anti-democratic.

The TPP, if enacted, would transfer the capacity of national governments to regulate healthcare, labor rights, the financial sector, and the environment to special TPP corporate tribunals, which have the power to sue our federal, state or local governments for compensation over laws and regulations that they deem would cause “loss of expected profit” or create a “competitive burden.” The TPP tribunal consists of three judges (who can include corporate lawyers on temporary leave from their day jobs) with the power to levy fines in the billions of dollars against any country that passes environmental or labor regulations that they adjudicate a “restraint of free trade.”
Now do you get why they wanted to keep this quiet?

Crunch time — hey, everybody with a phone: the vote on fast-tracking TPP is coming right up. Letters are apparently better than phone calls, but there isn't time (and e-mail evidently doesn't count at all). With the halls of Congress awash in corporate lobbyists, and the President pushing TPP like crazy, the best first thing that could happen is to get a "No" on fast track. If approved, there could be no debate or changes, just an up or down vote.

Please call Huffman and Thompson, both their DC offices and their local ones. Huffman's best number locally is San Rafael: 415-258-9657, and for DC, 202-225-5161. For Thompson, Santa Rosa is 707-542-7182, and DC is
202-225-3311. Call early and often.

Very important to defeat TPP. I called Feinstein's SF office (415 393-0707) this morning and got through after a brief hold. H Clinton is for it too, of course. Thanks for providing the other numbers.

Rosanne,

Did you post this because you fear the protesters and anti-Americanism or because you agree with them???

I think that it's obvious from my other posts in this thread that. like many others. I am concerned about this ... I posted this to show that this concern is international and that we are quickly losing support around the world because of our aggressive policies ....

Senate committee passed fast-track for TPP yesterday - We can STILL STOP IT.

Did anyone notice this? We can still stop this in the House of Representatives but we gotta act now.

Also, I'm a volunteer with 350 Sonoma County, a local climate action group. Please go to our Facebook page, and share or "like" the posts re: TPP (4 posts at the moment, maybe more in upcoming days). They were posted on 4/20, so you'll have to scroll down the page a bit to find all four posts.

P.S. I've posted this in the Political Action Alerts section on WaccoBB as well. I hope that's okay!

The Senate Finance Committee passed fast-track legislation for the corporate Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal last night, and it looks set to pass the Senate soon.

But we can still stop it in the House of Representatives. Most Democrats and some Republicans are opposed to a deal that corporations are allowed to read, but is kept hidden from the public.

In fact, Nancy Pelosi just said the House Republican leadership doesn’t have the votes to pass TPP yet.

Please call your member of the House of Representatives at the number below, and leave the following message with the office:
Unfortunately we could not identify your legislators.
“As your constituent, I am urging you to reject legislation that gives the President fast-track approval to the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP is a secret corporate deal that will endanger American jobs & the environment. Please vote no.”
After you have made the call, please fill out this questionnaire and let us know how the phone call went.
