I'm not sure I like this feature. Do those who get picked pay for it in some way or is it just Barry's personal opinion? Either way, is it really fair to those other things going on? I think if you are going to do this, Barry, you should have a seaparate catagory for this and not have it be at the top of the page of the general catagory where it really looks like favoritism.

has wacco already digressed to nitpicking? i appreciate your input, julia, but it feels like, more and more, people are busy responding to others' messages rather than posting (and here i am, one of them).
i appreciate that barry acts like more than a moderator and voices his opinion. doesn't matter whether i agree or not. i just appreciate having an interactive being moderating the list.

I don't mind at all, especially since Barry is herding this operation and keeping it going. He's entitled to express his opinions, also

It's Barry's board and he can do what he wants with it. IMHO.

I just take it as one person't opinion that I appreciate and enjoy reading. It's like reading a movie review in the newspaper - it's not favoritism, it's just one man's opinion. Let's not read too much into it.

Considering that Barry spends many pro-bono hours putting this whole digest together don't you think he should receive some reward for his efforts? Even if it's only a small one like recommending an event.

thanks everyone for your responses! It seems I was alone in my feedback. I also think Barry can do what he wants, however, he had a feedback catagory which solicits feedback and thats where I posted my opinion(it seems that it got moved to the community catagory)---as feedback. Perhaps I was being nitpicky, or having a bad day--- oh well!

Julia: I will give you a perspective on this: I just did a banner and felt that the manner in which Barry handled it was very professional.
He not ony checked out my character in a professional way, but he also explored the integrity of what I am doing [LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR]. I felt only professionalism from him during the whole process. I HIRED a wonderful webdesigner that he uses and also gladly paid for the banner. I hope that this gives you some perspective. I believe that Barry's approach in using advertising to probably help to finance WACCO is WONDERFUL! I believe we should be supportive! Elaine

I'm not sure I like this feature. Do those who get picked pay for it in some way or is it just Barry's personal opinion? Thank you, Julia, for prompting me to address this topic, and a warm thank you to all you Waccos for sharing your comments!
Barry's Picks is nothing more than an Editor's Choice recommendation. It's my personal opinion of what is exceptionally worthwhile. It generally comes from my first hand experience with the band or whatever it is. It is not something I charge for or even consult with whomever I am recommending.
What gives me the right to do it? Hey, it's my system! Besides that, though, I consider myself a rather discriminating fellow, especially in regards to music. I've always wanted to write reviews... I've made lots of notes about various performances but I never seem to get around to actually writing them up.
And, you can do it too! But there is one BIG proviso (well, actually two)...
1) You (or your friends or family) can not have any personal interest in the success of what you are recommending (financial or otherwise), and...
2) You can't call it Barry's Picks! :lol2:
If you think something is really exceptional, and you or your friends have nothing to gain from it, please let us know! And you, or whoever you are recommending, are welcome to make it a featured posting (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10521) so it stays at the top of the category listing.

Add me to the rather large list who totally agree with you on this one! The little red hen did all the work, the little red hen gets to eat the bread. Or at least publish an opinion about its edibility . . .

At this point a user named "elephantbrain" unloaded a rather vitriolic and R-rated "dump" on me. I have split off his/her (actually elephantbrain's registration stated "transgender" and "Lesbian in a Relationship" not to taint either of those fine communities!) posts into a separate thread in the Feeback category called "A dump on Barry". You can find it here (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11302).

George Bernard Shaw said somethng like, "If you're going to tell the truth, make them laugh, or they'll kill you." My first post was an (apparently failed) attempt at that. I hope better days are ahead for all of us. I'll agree with this much!
So, elephantbrain, you appear to have the advantage on me. You apparently know who I am (though "young man" is fitting less and less these days as I close in on 50), but I don't know who you are. So what's your real name?
I find that people are a lot more careful about how they "speak" when they are not anonymous.

While I am waiting for your real name, elephantbrain, let me remind you of one of our guidelines (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=886):
5) PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL: You are welcome to disagree with someone but you may not attack them in any way, either publicly or privately. Also, any private email should remain private unless you have the author's permission to post it. If you receive inappropriate private email in response to your post on WaccoBB.net, please contact me.
You are lucky I have a thick skin. If you respond to anybody else on this board in a similar fashion, in such a "ridiculous writing style", whether or not you are just trying to "make them laugh" you will no longer be welcome here.

Barry...uh...I don't think elephantbrain (watch out, this person never forgets)was being vitriolic. Actually, I think it was a joke; it got a chuckle out of me. The only problem I can see with it was the term b--- j--. Now, that isn't even on the list of seven words you can't say on TV (of course, c--- s----- is, but (s)he didn't say that. Actually, I'd say the odds for elephantbrain being a man are at least fifteen to one. Women don't usually say b--- j--, they say o--- s--. And, Barry, I really hope you keep the "Barry's Picks" feature, and I actually hope that others follow suit. I'd really like to hear what you and other Waccobators think about movies, music, books, plays and like that. I think it's an excellent use of WaccoBB which, frankly, does tend to be a little heavy and humorless from time to time. Thanks for your great work.

I find this quite entertaining, hence my prior response.
In my humble opinion, this is Barry's thing here, so he should be allowed to do what he wants to do. Take it or leave it.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Roland; it looks to me like a joke that was meant innocently and misconstrued as a vicious attack. Speaking as a habitual joker who has, usually inadvertently, pissed lots of people off, I know how readily that can happen, especially in non-face-to-face communication.
Actually, I have to admit that after Barry's build-up of elephantbrain's "vitriolic...dump", I was a little disappointed at how tame her/his posting was. I guess I'd been hoping for something a little more entertaining, such as when spiritually evolved Waccos have called me "curmudgeon", "anal" (and not in the good sense!), "jerk" and "asshole". Not that I'd really wish for Barry to be subjected to such nastiness.
While I don't agree with elephantbrain's point about the Barry's Picks issue, I also don't feel that she/he meant the post the way it was interpreted, and would hope that peace could be made in a way that allows her/him the option of remaining a Wacco member.
Sincerely, another jerk--ooops, I mean joker;
Dixon

I have learned that one of the best ways to drive someone insane is to tell them that they shouldn't feel what they feel. So, I wanted to acknowledge that you felt disrespected. I'm sorry about that. I really am. There is a parallel folly regarding your loyal supporters emailing me about the (nonexistent) hate and disrespect in my heart. I have no axe to grind with you Barry, I think you're a great guy, and I feel no disrespect toward you. Apparently I misinterpreted what was intended to be a good-natured tease, combined with real concern, to be a "vitriolic" attack. For that I offer my apology. I'm sorry but unlike other good natured pranksters in these parts, such as Dixon, who I know personally and has a long record in Waccoville as an equal-opportunity jester, this was your first post (under this username) and you did not provide your real name. There have been many people who join WaCCO just take pot shots at me and other Waccos. I see now that I took your comments as more inflammatory than they were intended. Please excuse me.
One of my roles here is to keep this space safe and "flame" free for our members. It is from this place that I reacted. I want to reiterate, if more gently, that you are welcome to remain a member, but please exercise more caution and discretion when posting and replying. I wasn't the only one offended, if incorrectly, by your post.
