The following excellent letter was sent by long-time rural Sebastopol resident Salli Raspberry to the PD yesterday. Though it has not yet appeared there, it is on Preserve Rural Sonoma County's new Facebook page. Their website is likely to be up soon.

Great letter sent to the PD today by Salli Rasberry - keep the pressure on, folks!

Editor – Let the Public Speak

The proposed Dairyman Winery and Event Center production facility is beyond the stuff of nightmares, set in one of the counties premiere and most biologically diverse Scenic Resources zones.

Dairyman proposes to blatantly convert Ag zoning into an industrial production complex. This facility would create an extremely negative impact, set a perilous precedence and is disruptive of the publics’ peace and enjoyment.

We in Sonoma County are dedicated to water conservation. Living in a severe drought, we consider this proposal a slap in the face. It takes 480 gallons of water to make one gallon of wine. They propose producing 1,500,000 gallons. Where will those 720 million gallons of water come from?

Then there’s the horrific congestion and traffic hazard on Highway 12. A production of this size requires about 4000 acres of land, not 40. Dairyman would be importing almost all of the raw materials. Big rigs loaded with grape juice and cases of wine shipped and received, employees and patrons equals approximately 25,000 deliveries a year; Picture dodging the semi’s and car traffic crossing Hwy 12 and the Joe Rodota Trail. Chaos.

The PD coverage of Napa's winery event center growing pains should be a warning to our local leaders. We need better defined guidelines and boundaries about what we should and shouldn’t permit.

The entrance to the proposed Dairyman Winery/event center project crosses the Joe Rodota trail just east of Llano Road and Hwy 12, where nearly 700 bicyclists and walkers pass daily. This will be a dangerous intersection with all the traffic and huge tankers going in and out of the facility. Please stay posted on Facebook for updates!
