I (Had) A Dream

Once upon a time, (50 years ago,) I had a dream:

I dreamed that:

People would ask, not for what their country could do for them?,

but rather, what could they do for their own countrymen?

I dreamed that people would have (this half century later)

transformed their raging bigotry and hatred and changed all our fates.

I dreamed that people would instead idolize Eisenhower

rather than Ronald Reagan (the scripted Hollywood actor).

I dreamed that everyone in America would have a meal to eat,

a warm place to sleep and neighborhoods with safer streets.

I dreamed that all this modern technology

would (have) advanced our concept of a more humane Psychology.

I dreamed that my voice would be heard,

(not by those drunkened with power)

but by those who are still asleep in their (self-serving) ignorant beliefs.

I dreamed that violence would become a thing of the past

and true Peace would come to be a clear choice that would actually last.

I dreamed that men and women would step up to the plate

and take responsibility for this direction for their own children’s sakes.

I dreamed that love wouldn’t be so elusive and clever

and that Wedding Vows spoken really meant “forever.”

I dreamed that Truth would become our new aged, one Spiritual Goal

and no longer would we see anymore bankrupted-impoverished souls.

I dreamed that every known religion would re-examine their own fallacy

and they'd burn every insidious religious book in a new scorched earth policy.

I dreamed that hypocrisy and deception would become

Legal terms punishable by Law.

I dreamed that Truth would rain down on us

(like) a nuclear bomb to waken everyone up.

I dreamed that things would have gotten better rather than

becoming worse over this past half century.

I dreamed that positive people all over the globe

would at last come together and reconcile our differences.

I dreamed that all our futures had fulfilling possibilities and opportunities

Instead of the zeitgeist of false and empty promises made by spiritual leaders today.

I dreamed that the sight of the Crow would be replaced by the sight of the Dove

And the Phoenix would rise from the ashes and blanket the Earth with unconditional Love.

But, it was just a dream, and dreams aren’t reality.

I had a dream but it was (clearly) riddled with too much confusion, and

upside down in deceptive mass-marketed, and unrealistic promises and illusions.

Martin Luther King was an important civil rights activist. He was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the "I Have A Dream" speech. He was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in 1968.

Martin Luther King Day is a relatively new federal holiday and there are few long standing traditions. It is seen as a day to promote equal rights for all Americans, regardless of their background. Some educational establishments mark the day by teaching their pupils or students about the work of Martin Luther King and the struggle against racial segregation and racism. In recent years, federal legislation has encouraged Americans to give some of their time on this day as volunteers in citizen action groups.
