View Full Version : DOG CO-PARENTING. Pet Shared Custody? Interesting Concept...

Greetings,

As some of you may recall, I've been posting here to find Riley the dog a new home. However, since Riley's former "dad" is off to engineering school in two weeks, I will now be taking her into my home full time in all of her sweet love and cuteness. Which brings me to think outside the box once more, and to offer an even more unique situation, whereby Riley might find a home with me part time and a home with another CO-PET PARENT part time. I offer this concept, since I have yet to find her an adoptive home in the last four weeks via the Wacco website and other venues, and with the busy holidays approaching, this will likely delay her adoption prospects for now. However, I've received about six inquiries since mid October, but none that have yielded the right situation for timing or a "match".

Sooo... getting creative here....

I suppose there may be some of you who would very much like to have a pet to love within a committed part time role, but cannot commit to a full time role. I admit, I fit this description, as well. So its here that I'm attempting to offer the best of both worlds in the hopes of locating a person in a similar situation.

The pros of a shared CO-pet-parent role are numerous:

The best of both worlds to have a dog AND relief for free time when needed.
Shared food, grooming, and vet costs.
A chance to enrich the dogs life with more love and opportunities for socializing and play.
Flexibility in pet co parenting scheduling or fixed dates, as well.

And here's a little bit about this sweet gal, Riley:

Things at which Riley excels:

Riley loves to fetch and return tennis balls. Just tell her to “leave it”.
Play with other dogs on backyard dog play dates. She has a current play mate everyday.
Likes walks on the leash, but she needs training not to pull.
Does just fine at keeping still under the table at outdoor restaurants where dogs are accepted. Just give her a minute or two to adjust.
Travels quietly and sleeps in automobiles.
Sleeps great in her crate at night. Just tell her “night-night”.
Is potty trained and knows how to use a doggy door to relieve herself.
She loves to get into bed (if you allow it) and will lie on her back and cuddle in yours arms.
Does AWESOME at the dog park. No aggression and just loves to chase and retrieve her ball.
Riley has been spayed, micro-chipped, and has license and current vaccinations. She is 49 pounds full grown.

Things Riley needs to work upon:

Leash walk pulling, (which I am working on and making good progress) and initial pouncing on her human for the first five seconds of greeting, as well as, getting into the trash bin; ALL CORRECTABLE ISSUES with a little training and trash bin security. At present, I'm enrolling Riley in "agility" training becasue it simply creates a better dog overall. And who doesn't want their dog to be happy and awesome, right?

My goal is to find Riley a CO-PET PARENT home with people who meet the screening criteria to make sure she is not going in to the wrong hands or mismatched with people who are not active, or are harsh disciplinarians, or Class B “animal bunchers” who sell to animal testing laboratories. i.e. the necessity of a home safety verification, neighbor character references, etc.

Please call me with inquiries. I’m happy to make introductions. Meet Riley and you’ll see that she’s a lovable, friendly and well behaved dog.
