Former congressman Dennis Kucinich makes the point that economic interests are driving the war on ISIS.they drive everything, if sometimes from the back seat. And there are lots of other passengers who have their own ideas on where to go and how to get there.
The more relevant claim he makes is there were alternatives to war that weren't applied. That's hard to refute but it's hard to prove they would have been effective. The unhappy fact is Americans respond well to fear and to a vision of themselves as powerful. So give us a couple of gruesome videos that make the threat seem personal, a claim we're being emasculated, and an option to reassert virility, with the extra benefit that it's quick & easy to do, and bingo. Bombs away. I suspect those who wanted to oppose the creation of an ISIL-led state felt this was about the best they could get away with, even if they believed (which I'm not sure they do) that a non-military approach would be effective too.
