Does anyone have recommendations about who to use for a monthly cellphone plan in this area?
thanks

I am very happy with PagePlus (https://www.pagepluscellular.com).

It uses Verizon's cell towers, so everywhere Verizon works, it works, and it's way cheaper, and with no contracts. I have a $30/month plan that includes 1200 minutes, 1200 texts, and 500MB of data.

For the super minimalist, they have a $12/month plan that is 250 minutes, 250 texts, and 10 MB of data.

...and more expensive options, as well.

I just go online and pay each month when I get the text from them telling me it's time. Apparently you can set up auto-pay, but I haven't tried it. I like that I can change my plan whenever I want to. For instance, if I know I'm going on vacation, and will be using lots more data, I can buy a more expensive plan just for this month.

Petaluma Wireless set me up with this when I bought my used iPhone 4 from them 9 months ago, and I haven't had any problems.

Generally, people seem to find Verizon's cell towers better than AT&T's for coverage in rural areas. I don't know about other options.

Yes, I use https://pagepluscellular.com/ . They have several inexpensive plans, cheaper than Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile. For example, my cell usage is infrequent, since I use a land line for most calls, and I opt for a pay-as-you-go cell plan for $25 which lasts for for 120 days and up to 416 minutes. That's a little over $6 per month, whether you make any calls or not. The cost per minute for that plan is about six cents for the 416 minutes included, and if you need more minutes, there are other plans which lower the cost to four cents per minute.
