The following petition letter to President Obama is one thing that could help to shift the direction of the powers that be who can actually do something to change the destructive overfishing, Ocean poaching of fish for profit, and ultimately destroying the viability of the ocean ecosystems which so many humans and other creatures depend on.
The whole (petition) message that is sent to Obama Admin can be found here: Tell President Obama to end illegal fishing (https://support.worldwildlife.org/site/Advocacy;jsessionid=9C1C16AF1E20DDCB04B42AC3590D919E.app245a?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=783&autologin=true&link=txt1&utm_campaign=can&utm_medium=email&utm_source=can-alert&utm_content=140520)
The gist of it:
Illegally caught seafood looks the same as any other seafood you buy at a store or in a market, making it extremely difficult for you to tell right from wrong.
By illegal seafood, we mean seafood caught in parts of the ocean where fishing is not permitted, or caught in greater numbers than a fisher's permit allows. With losses due to illegal fishing estimated at up to $23 billion annually, ill-gotten profits are undercutting the honest profits of fishers and businesses who are committed to operating in a legal way.
Fishing operations occur far from the eyes of consumers and regulators; the US needs to establish and enforce more transparent and traceable fishing practices.
This is a global challenge, but we can have a huge impact in the US if we improve our laws. Sign the petition below to tell President Obama to stop illegal seafood from entering the United States.
