I was surprised to read in the Press Democrat last week how many court cases end up in Plea bargains rather than going to court. In the last year, of the 15,055 criminal cases resolved, only 112 went to jury or court trials.
14,943 cases were settled before trial, most by Plea Bargains.

Mostly, I am in favor of this. I don't think that long prison sentences do anything to deter criminal behavior or prevent someone from returning to crime.
Diversion programs and probation with community service and restitution are of more value in my opinion.
Of course, if people refuse to learn how to behave reasonably in society, locking them away may be the only answer.
What do you think?
