OK Everybody,

Here's the link about Downtown Santa Rosa's free wireless service:

https://ci.santa-rosa.ca.us/default.aspx?PageId=2412

Here's what they say but there's more info linked to that page:

NEW FREE DOWNTOWN WIFI SERVICE

Now you can utilize free wireless internet access within downtown Santa Rosa.

This service, through a partnership with Sonic.net, is designed for outside use with some indoor coverage in certain areas. This service generally extends along Fourth St. between E Street and the Plaza over to City Hall along First Street. Look for the Blue Hotspot signs located on downtown poles.

Re the one-hour restriction on free use at the library -- it only applies on their equipment. I've spent many hours there on my laptop. No time limit, never a problem. Suzanna

Since the City of Sebastopol recently turned down the option of having a free municipal wi-fi network :(: I thought it might be time to rejuvenate this thread of free wi-fi hotspots in Sonoma County. Please see the previous posting to this thread on the website.

I can add 2 places I found recently, including Infusions Teahouse (near Whole Foods in Sebastopol) and Jasper O'Farrell's on Hwy 12 downtown Sebastopol.

Please Reply Publicly to this thread if you know of other free wi-fi hotspots. Businesses that offer free wi-fi are welcome to post here as well, including a short plug for their business.

In Rodent Park: 1. Safeway on Commerce Ave (Safeway server), 2. the carwash on Rodent park Expressway at the intersection of Redwood (linksys) and 3. The northeastern corner of the Mountain Shadows Shopping Center (linksys).

In Pettyluma: 1. The Lucky Grocery store on Lakeville in the corner by McDonald's (linksys), though the signal may actually come from across the street 2. That "pilates" place just off of Lakeville near 101 and the 7-11 store (linksys). Sometimes you can get that signal at the northeastern corner of the boat harbor/hotel on Lakeville. 3. The parking lot at the downtown Post Office.

There are zillions of websites which catalog these already. If you picked one to update (jiwire.com is probably the biggest free directory, and easy to add listings to), you'd have a list to start with, and could add any additional you know of. That'd give you a completely up-to-date system

I may offer free wifi at my pub, though I worry about pub-trivia cheaters. As it is, Occidental is without cell coverage (much to my dismay), so VOIP for cell may work out there. Free aluminum foil hats, and special anti-radiation moon crystals to anyone who is worried about the EMF (except when it comes through their own computer) ;) Seriously - what happened at the vote for Sebastopol? I haven't been able to track down the minutes...

Cheers!
