Can someone please fill me in on what a pet owner may go through by choosing to not vaccinate their dog in Sonoma County, as far as legal issues and how you are treated by veterinarians?
Amazingly, human babies are kicked out of pediatricians' offices and refused care when their parents make informed choices not to vaccinate!
Please don't reply with lectures about the holy virtues of vaccines. I've been extensively researching this issue for over 10 years and am done debating it. I just want to know what the legal issues are with pets and if a vet may refuse care if a dog owner tries to protect their dog from vaccines.
Thanks

Some vets probably do refuse to treat animals who are not vax'd although they seem more tolerent than human doctors on the issue. Legally, the only vax required is rabies presumably because it is the only one what can be transmitted to humans. This vax is also required to license your animals. However, there are vets who will write a letter for you so you can apply for an exemption if they think the vax is detrimental to the pet's health. There are also a few towns that will accept titers. Oh, and some homepathic vets give some nosodes which are supposed to counteract the "bad" stuff in the rabies vax?
As for the rest of the vax, anyone can buy them in feed stores and give them to their animals so you could very well tell a vet that is what you do. Rabies is a modified live virus which is why it has to be given by a vet or a vet tech. Apparently some vets report to the city they practice in about any new pets they see that also reside in that city so the city can monitor whether they are licensed or not. I dunno if this is a requirement but a little while after I got a puppy my town sent me a letter about a license. If you don't vax, there are still some precautions you have to take especially if you have a puppy. You just can't go trotting off to the local dog park!

Thanks for this info. I just adopted a 7-8 year-old dog from the shelter so she has already been given vaccines and is licensed. We are going to our new vet today. I don't want to do the yearly vaccines since I want to keep her in great health into her old age - so that's why I asked. I've not had a dog since I was a kid 40 years ago and I've heard a lot about dogs getting overvaccinated. I have also seen friends' older dogs going downhill and even having seizures after getting the shots.
Thanks again,
Jane
