View Full Version : Chase and Amazon work together

Something very odd happened with my credit card billing; I have an old Chase credit card, which I'm phasing out (there are just three recurring monthly charges that I haven't got around to changing yet), and a newer card that I got from Westamerica. They're both Visa cards. My Westamerica card is the one that's listed on Amazon as my card or payment method.

The other day I got a bill from Chase, with only Amazon purchases on it (there were 7 of them) with my WestAmerica Visa number on the bill as "Account Number". They expected me to pay Chase for the stuff I bought on Amazon using my Westamerica card. I called Westamerica and they knew nothing about it, and said I should call Chase, which I did; I told them that I didn't want to pay Chase for this stuff, and they agreed to take the charges off, and when I asked, told me that I wouldn't have to pay a "late charge."

I still don't understand how Chase managed to worm their way into this, and wonder if this has happened to anyone else. I don't see a way to contact Amazon by email (and it'd probably be a bot if I did), but think I'll talk to someone else at Westamerica about it, because the whole deal seems outrageously sneaky.

It sounds more like selecting the wrong card at purchase or your Chase card is still your default card for your Amazon account. Amazon does have customer service, with actual humans, and you can reach them by email. You do need to dig deep. Try the My Account section, including looking waaaay down at the bottom of the page.

Also see if your credit card customer service can provide you with a phone number for the merchant submitting the charges.

Here's what a friend says:

Chase manages Amazon accounts and they probably found that you also have an amazon account so without your permission they seem to have combined them. You could write to Amazon through their custmer service or phone Chase to complain about them doing this without your permission...

(After I made several purchases on Amazon, using my Westamerica Visa, I was billed for these purchases by Chase; the only purchases listed on this bill were from Amazon, and the credit card listed was not a card I ever had. I had switched all my payment methods from a Chase card to the Westamerica card, since I was phasing out the Chase card.)

OK, here's an update:

I did speak to several people at both Amazon and Chase; Amazon said that I had an "Amazon Rewards" card. I said that I didn't, and had never applied for one. After I tried to get info about the supposed application for that card, the Amazon people said that I'd have to talk to Chase. I did, for quite awhile, and finally, when I insisted that I wanted to see a copy of the "application," the Chase woman started listing all of the things I'd need in order to get that copy: Government-issued I.D., a copy of a police report (fraud), and a couple of other things that were ridiculous. This had the desired effect: I gave up on trying to get a copy of the application for the non-existent card. And I cancelled the Chase card.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Sara
