What allows someone to sit behind a computer and destroy a strangers' life? ..... What kind of desensitization and brainwashing accomplishes this? ... some things I will never understand ...

I think that you're both onto something ... for most of us technology ( computers, videos, movies, television, games ) is a way to connect us to people that we care about, it increases entertainment, it provides us with information to enhance our lives ...

But it's also a powerful brainwashing tool .... we all know that from television ... so children who are exposed to violent video games and movies grow up thinking that it's appropriate to push a button and "kill the enemy" and might be more likely to go for the real thing when they grow up ... there's also the complete and utter fascination with technology ... just think, you can sit at a computer safe and sound and destroy lives thousands of miles away ... you don't have to look into anyone's eyes, you don't have to hear screams ... it's an impersonal experience ...

Think of how we all communicate on the internet ... would we be so forceful with one another face to face? ... think about hackers and those that plant viruses ... would they continue to do their dirty deeds if they could see their victims and the grief that they cause?

The question is, how do we recover our humanity towards one another in the face of all of this?

'cuz before those arrived, people were kinder and gentler.
