Event Barry's Pick: Tom Finch Group at Peri's

Tom Finch is a world class musician that, amazingly enough, you can still catch playing the neighborhood venues in Fairfax when he's not out on the road playing with Big Brother and Holding Company (yes, that one!)

Tom Finch Group plays a hip and unique blend of styles best described as but not limited to World-Funk-Rock. Featuring Tom Finch, (J.J.) Jason Jones, Andius Jent, and Marc Carmi Smith, the group offers original compositions with infectious melodies, hypnotic grooves, inspiring lyrics, and fiery solos. The band is extremely versatile and it’s many flavors appeal to most audiences while the band member’s virtuosity and enthusiasm make each performance fresh and exciting.

It's some mixture of jamming and really refined composition. Each piece is a delightful sonic journey that remains interesting from start to finish. It's heavy on the instrumental (jamming?) part, and lighter on the lyrics which is just the way I like it. It's complex enough that makes you want to "listen hard" and at the same time it's irresistible to dance! Their original composition bring Phish, Jeff Beck and Miles Davis to mind.

I've got less of a fix on the side musicians, but each lives up to the demands of playing such richly textured music.
