Sonoma County Conservation Action awarded Sebastopol City Councilmember Sarah Glade Gurney its Upstream Swimmer Award at its 17th Annual Dinner Celebration held recently at Sonoma Mountain Village.
Following Dr. Lester’s speech, SCCA held its annual awards ceremony.

The Upstream Swimmer Award is given to Sonoma County elected representatives who have “shown resolve in standing for environmental principles despite opposition.”

“We presented the Upstream Swimmer Award to Sarah Glade Gurney this year in recognition of her many years standing firm on the Sebastopol City Council. She has sent a clear and consistent message that developments that do not adhere to Sebastopol’s General Plan are not welcome in her small community. Additionally, she did not allow Sebastopol to be bullied into accepting development in violation of standards for wetland preservation. Her actions say that environmental laws and land use regulations are not just ‘suggestions’, they must be followed,” Board President Una Glass said.

Prior recipients of the Upstream Swimmer Award include former West County Supervisor Mike Reilly.

Other recognition was given to Peter Baye and Chris Poehlmann, awarded the Dick Day Community Activist Award for their work fighting forest clear-cuts for vineyards in Northwest Sonoma County; to LandPaths for their program work connecting people to protected open space land, especially the Bohemia Waterfall Park in Camp Meeker and Bayer Farm in Roseland; and a resolution from the CA State Assembly and Senate was awarded to the CA Coastal Commission in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the passage of Prop. 20, the California Coastal Act.
