How to Tell if You Have Smart Meters or Analog Meters

The old, but good, analog meters look like the top photos. The analog electric meter on the left has a flat round dial that you can see spinning when electricity is being used. It also has several dials that the meter reader reads.

The analog gas meter looks like the top right photo. It may be white or gray or painted any color.

The not so smart meters look like these below. They most often say Smart Meter on them. The electric smart meter has digital numbers on it like a digital alarm clock or watch. The electric smart meter is pictured on the left. The gas smart meter on the right.

Please make a point of letting people who might not know the difference between analog meters and smart meters....particularly folks who are more right brained and less technically oriented, those who are so busy they would likely never think of such things, the elderly, and those that speak English as a second language. For Spanish speaking people, the word for dumb is mudo, and the word for dangerous is peligroso, which may be helpful in explaining that they are not smart or safe. And then point people to this article for 8 ways they'll save money by not having one and tell them they can opt-out at any time by calling 1-866-743-0263 available 24/7.

I just got help interpreting these flyers in Spanish.

One explains why one should opt-out of smart meters with PG&E's opt-out phone number.

    Opt Out Neighbors Spanish.doc

The other clearly shows the difference between analog and smart meters.

Please share these with the Latino community.
