Enough grape vines! Can we STOP the next big clearcut of Sonoma Co redwood forest?

In northern California, near the town of Annapolis in Sonoma County, there is a redwood forest that has been trying to replenish itself after taking a huge hit from logging in the past century. If, starting now, we prevent futher environmental damage and allow the forest the time it needs to repair itself, it will recover. Through these redwoods runs the Gualala River; it contains endangered salmon, a vital part of the area’s ecosystem. Two wineries, Artesa Napa Winery and Premier Pacific Vineyards, are proposing to clear-cut over 1,900 acres of these redwoods to be replaced by their vineyards. PLEASE read the rest of this article, sign on, act up, whatever!

Unfortunately, as long as Efren "F*CK the Environment" Carillo is the Supervisor for that area, our pro-conservation wishes will never be heard. He's a paid puppet of whatever big business contributes to keeping him in power. His vote has already been bought and paid for, so don't look down that avenue for any support.

Perhaps finding the distributors and re-sellers of the wineries, and boycotting might work.

To start with, demand a detailed EIR and actual study of the effects such operation would have on the on the Gualala River watershed.

And the affect of any clear-cut there would have on ground water, silting of gravel beds, and existing shaded areas over the whole area that affects the Gualala River and it’s tributaries, flows, depth, and temperature, specifically relating to the Salmonids spawning and necessary summer survival areas for the salmon “fry” (pl.n.1. a. Small fish, especially young, recently hatched fish.).

Next, assess the usage of Sulfur that is used to control mold on the Vineyards and other fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides that would end up going in the watershed and the salmon’s habitat.

Then there is the petition process.

Then consider the level of groundwater usage the whole operation would use with the homes that are in one of the existing plans. And also the existing trees ability to capture humid air (fog) and form droplets of water to then fall onto the ground surface that keeps the overall moisture levels sufficient to both support the existing foliage in that area and surrounding perimeter area and also animal species both transient and permanent.

Then there are the access roads that will have to be cut, improved, and maintained that add to the siltation of the watershed area that would also have to be mitigated BEFORE development begins so as to preemptively [3. b] prevent irreversible environmental damage, degradation, and general negative effects on neighboring properties.

Then on both the local and State levels there is the Petition process.

It's interesting to read what I found on Google: The Myth of the Family Winery Global Corporations Behind California Wine

Yes, I read that as well, and Costa Brown is one of those wineries toted as a local when it is now owned by a huge corporation. Its the winery people are excited about adding to the proposed Barlow plan, that will use a sizable portion of our local water supply.

I said it on the day I was arrested at the Board of Supervisors and I'll say it again, the true miracle we need is turning wine back into water! Water for growing organic food, permaculture style, for the earth and all living things.
Monoculture, dare we say it, as the front page of the Bohemian said recently, is a disaster.
"Dis-aster" means dis, against, aster, stars=against the stars is not where I want to place our future.

You pretty much said it all! When they call it Preservation Ranch you know it means destruction, when they call it Oak Grove you know the trees are gone, I vow to fight this thing and you can be pretty sure they will try to push it through, with Efren's paid for support, during the Holiday season...just like last year when they approved Dutra Asphalt, The Roblar Quarry, (both of which are being challenged by lawsuits paid for by the public) and the frost protection for the vineyards that gives them the right to steal more water form our rivers.
I hope people from wacco will come to the meetings because that's where the decisions are made. Get on the email list for receiving notification of Board of Supes meetings and agendas.
Local is where we can be effective.
