Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation Emissions from Smart Meters

Finally, Sage Associates Environmental Consultants, have completed a report on the environmental impact of Radiation Emissions from Smart Meters. It has just been made available as of 1/1/2011. This does not make up for what the CPUC or FCC should have been studying all along, but it's something, and still must be pressured to do. Here's the forwarded message from EMF Safety Network, along with the down-loadable report.

    Notice of Availability

Sage Associates has published an on-line report titled Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation
Emissions from Smart Meters, dated January 1, 2011.

    Contact: [email protected]

The Report is available for download at:
    https://sagereports.com/smart-meter-rf/

About the Report (from the website)
This Report is prepared in support of open discussion on radiofrequency microwave radiation levels (RF radiation levels) that are produced by wireless electric meters (i.e., smart meters) in California. There has been virtually no information made available to the public, nor to decision-makers on RF radiation levels. Significant unanswered questions still exist about what levels of radio-frequency microwave radiation will be produced by these meters.

This question has very important consequences for public health and welfare, because the public may be subjected to exposures at levels that either violate federal safety limits, or face chronic exposure levels that have already been associated with adverse health impacts, or both.

This Report uses computer modeling to predict power density levels that may be present where smart meters are in operation. The methodology used in this assessment is consistent with FCC OET 65 equations for prediction of RF power density levels. Many scenarios are modeled, to bracket the range of reasonably predictable RF exposures in typical living conditions. Many variables must be considered (installation very close to occupied space, how many meters are installed on a single wall, how frequently they will transmit an RF pulse, how powerful the RF radiation pulses will be, how far inside a home they will penetrate and at what intensities, how much ‘piggybacking’ of RF signals will occur from neighboring wireless meters, reflections that may increase RF levels, and what amount of RF wireless exposure may already be present beforehand, etc.)

To date, California’s electric utilities have told the California Public Utilities Commission only that they will comply with applicable federal safety limits. However, there are substantial discrepancies in what the FCC compliance testing says is needed for wireless meters to comply with their safety limits, and the manner in which many meters are being installed and are operating.

People may use this assessment to further their knowledge about wireless meters, using the tables that predict RF radiation levels, the tables that highlight potential violations of safety limits, and the health study-related tables showing RF radiation levels reported to pose health impacts. Although the authors expect there will be differences of opinion about the content of this report, we believe it will provide a basis for more educated decision-making and full disclosure of impacts.

The Report is not intended to be a substitute for disclosure of RF radiation levels by the CPUC and the electric utilities it regulates. They are responsible to the public to provide reliable and comprehensive information on impacts from wireless meters.

Is it possible for someone to provide a synopsis of the report, I don't have time for all the downloads...that would be really great.

Its only 284 KB in the DOC format. Very fast DL.
It is about 68 pages, 16,7117 words. Lots of info.

Sorry I am not able to give a synopsis on that report.

Below is the direct link to the DOC.

Re: Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation Emissions from Smart Meters

The report concludes (in so many words) that due to many factors, including the particulars of a given Smart Meter installation, the ages and health condition of the inhabitants and the number and amount of other wireless devices in use (cell and cordless phones, WiFi networking devices), - and due to large uncertainties about the physiological effects of RF radiation on the human body - neither the FCC nor the CPUC can give assurance that Smart Meters will not have adverse health effects. The same is true of the various wireless communication devices already in use. With so much unknown, the authors of the report advise caution in adding this new source of RF radiation to what already exists.

This is certainly not the first time a town council has acted in a way that defies rational logic:

The first two "afflicted" persons were Parris' daughter and neice, nine-year-old Elizabeth "Betty" Parris and eleven-year-old Abigail Williams. After days of displaying characteristics of aberrant behavior including claims of sharp pain, paralyzation, choking, crawling under furniture, staring-into-space, making non-sensical noises and crying out, they were prayed over by Reverend Parris and several local ministers. When this failed to cure them, the local physician, Dr. William Griggs was called in to examine the girls. His diagnosis was that their malady was of a spiritual nature. They were under the "evil hand" of witchcraft.

Ultimately the group of "afflicted" would grow to include many more children. All of these would claim to be "tortured, wasted, pined and consumed" by the spells and invisible specters of local residents who were witches. Altogether, the "afflicted children" would accuse over two hundred individuals, most of whom would escape prosecution. Nearly fifty would save their lives by confessing to the crime of witchcraft, and begging the community's forgiveness.(This group would be asked to turn "state's evidence" and help the court ferret out more suspects.) Twenty would lose their lives through the actions of Salem's Court of Oyer and Terminer, nineteen by hanging and one (Giles Corey) by the torture of pressing.

Well, unless you believe that indeed the women were witches, this is a case where a community found symptoms very similar to those presented by Electrohypersensitivity, and the town council, responding to the irrational fears of their constituents (just like the Marin county supervisors) responded accordingly: Hung 19 and pressed 1. (Pressed to death, that's old testament punishment for sure).

Our history is rife with actions by elected officials that defy logic or reason; one of my favorites is the bill by the Indian legislature to change the value of pi (in order to establish that it was possible to square a circle). It was only stopped from becoming law when a professor of mathematics arrived to obtain funding for the university, and was offered to be introduced to the bill's author; he declined, stating that he "already knew enough crazy people". He coached enough senators over the night to get the bill indefinitely tabled.

While radiofrequency (RF) radiation and microwave (MW) radiation both give off electromagnetic fields, they are separate forms of radiation, and SmartMeters don't give off MW radiation. So, it is wrong to combine the two different forms of radiation. Why people do this , I don't know, probably just to confuse and scare people.

Well, no. Microwaves are part of the radio frequency range of electromagnetic frequencies. According to this source, smart meters operate in the 902 - 928 MHz range, which is well within the range of microwave frequencies. Cordless phones operate at even higher frequencies, even further into the microwave range. Same is true of wireless networking devices (routers, etc.).
