Statement from Marin County Supervisor Steve Kinsey:
"I am writing to acknowledge your correspondence and to let you know
that all five Supervisors are committed to changing the way that PG&E
and the CPUC are dealing with the legitimate health and safety risks
that the public has raised about installation of wireless Smart
Meters. Our Board has twice asked the CPUC to impose a moratorium on
installations. We feel strongly that there should be a moratorium
until the upcoming California Council of Science and Technology report
has been issued and responsibly evaluated by the CPUC.
We have also called upon the CPUC to approve an opt-out alternative.
We have written a letter in support of Assemblymember Jared Huffman’s
bill that would mandate provision of an opt-out option for property
owners wishing to avoid the risks of installation of a wireless meter.
We want a provision allowing already installed wireless meters to be
replaced if a customer wishes.
The harsh reality is that the County of Marin doesn’t have
jurisdiction over the actions of PG&E. Adoption of a Smart Meter
installation moratorium ordinance will have no legally binding effect
on the installation. However, given the arrogance of those who do have
authority to impose limitations on Smart Meter deployment, I expect
that our Board will support adoption of a moratorium as a public
statement. We will use our action to further amplify the community’s
concerns in an effort to get the responsible agency and the utility to
heed the public's warning.
Even as we wait for that specific action by the Board of Supervisors,
I have been communicating with government relations staff at PG&E. I
have asked them to cease all installations and to respect an
individual’s requests for no installation should they continue. I am
urging anyone who personally witnesses PG&E’s contractor ignoring a
sign requesting no Smart Meter to call my office.
I commend the engagement of Marin residents on this issue and
encourage you to continue to speak up publicly regarding the
importance of alternatives for customers.
Sincerely,
Steve Kinsey"
