GO LOCAL COOPERATIVE LAUNCHES “MADE LOCAL” CAMPAIGN

Businesses and Individuals Invited To Take Part in a Program To Support the Local Economy and Reduce GHG By Buying Locally Made Products

    Sonoma County, CA

As part of the 350.org International Day of Climate Action on October 24th the Sonoma County GoLocal Cooperative will formally launch its Made Local campaign. The campaign goal is to get the widest possible engagement of all Sonoma County residents to increase their purchase of locally grown and made products.

One of the positive impacts of buying local is reducing transportation of goods and thus lowering greenhouse gas pollution. Perhaps more significant, however, is that “re-localizing” means that manufacturing is returned to the community. This makes the environmental impacts of production visible, which in turn gives us the opportunity and incentive to mitigate them.

Increasing local production is one of the best and fastest ways to stimulate the local economy and create good local jobs. With the help of many other existing organizations the Made Local project will create an inventory of, and branding for, locally owned growers, manufacturers and their products. GoLocal will also look for opportunities to incubate new businesses to provide locally made products that can replace imported goods.

Sonoma County has a rich and deep agricultural tradition on which to build. Therefore the first phase of this campaign focuses on food and agriculture and is modeled on an earlier campaign, Select! Sonoma. Active from 1989 until 2002 it was successful in expanding markets for our agricultural products locally and around the nation. Since that time the educational and marketing work of Slow Foods, Farm Trails, Fork and Shovel, California Alliance with Family Farmers and many others makes our task a lot easier than it was for those pioneers.

Show your support for protecting the environment by taking action now. Join GoLocal, the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, the Climate Protection Campaign and other local organizations for the Sonoma County 350 Climate Action at CHOPS Teen Center at 509 Adams Street in Santa Rosa, October 24th from 3pm to 5pm.
