Registered Sex Offenders in your area, Parents check this out!

Here is a website where you can type in your address and find out where registered sex offenders live and work. When you click on the dots you will see their address and photos, and what their convictions are. Share this with every US parent you know!

A better resource for Californians is www.meganslaw.ca.gov. I don't know how complete the info at familywatchdog is, or how often it is updated. The Megans Law site is operated by the State of California and does not rely on gathering information from other sources.

This is important information. Let us also remember that although there are a surprising and potentially alarming number of "sex offenders" on these maps, they are not all running around molesting every child they see. Here is a quote from www.crisiscenter.org:

Incest "Just as most sexual assault against adults is committed by someone the victim knows, nearly all sexual abuse of children is committed by someone the child knows and trusts. Many times, that person is a family member."

This, for me, is the most important lesson for parents (same source):

"As we teach our children to respect their parents and their elders, we also have to help them understand that sometimes adults do bad things. We have to help children understand that they have the right to say “no” to behavior that makes them uncomfortable, and at the same time help them to respect the adults in their lives as well."

I say, teach kids to respect and trust their feelings MORE than adults, and perhaps we will help them grow into adults who take good care of themselves and never go against themselves in the mistaken belief that they are being "kind" or avoiding "offending" someone. Hey, for that matter, let's teach ourselves that, too!! Just say "NO" when you are uncomfortable!

The megan's law site is superior in my opinion. It is more complete and easier to use.

    Allan!
Spoken like a truly wise person....but some of these "offenders" use force to overcome resistance.

I support %100 parents wanting to keep their children safe from sexual abuse. The problem with focusing on registered sexual offenders is that %90 of ALL child sexual abuse is done by family members and other people close to the child who have never been prosecuted for sexual offenses. Most child sexual abuse is incest, dad or step dad etc. takes advantage of the proximity and vulnerablity of his own children. While mom is at the computer looking for sexual offenders in the neighborhood dad might be somewhere else in the house molesting the child. If you want to keep your children safe make sure that they feel comfortable talking to you about anything. Put their safety above dad's pay check. Take this warning seriously. Barrie

It needs to be a two-pronged approach. Not only do we need to teach our children to be aware and to let us know if someone does something inappropriate, but we also need to educate ourselves about the individuals around us. Knowing who is already registered will prevent them from becoming one of those trusted individuals (a family friend, a trusted neighbor, the handyman allowed into the home, or perhaps even a new stepparent) that can harm our children. There is a high degree of recidivism in child sexual abusers, and they cannot be trusted. Forewarned is forearmed.
