Hurrah! It was just announced that this wonderful school in northwest Santa Rosa has won the Bohemian's Best Private School of the North Bay 2008 award.
Although the terminology that is accepted and used here is "private" school, a better description might be "independent". Free of mandatory IQ testing, curriculum dictates, and other government control, Waldorf education combines the academics and the arts to develop balanced, aware, creative, self-motivated, and loving human beings - ideals that Summerfield parents support through daily sacrifices of time and money.
Congratulations to the dedicated teachers who put in long hours for low salaries, to the families who pay and volunteer in many capacities, and to the unique students, present and past, who graduate from this school to work towards creating a new and better world for us all.
Thanks, also, to the Summerfield Farm, an agricultural model which brings an organic, biodynamic learning experience of food-growing to the youth of Sonoma County, a true and lasting commitment to the future of our planet.
Summerfield Waldorf School is a member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America, the Slow Food Movement, Sonoma County Farm Trails, Demeter Biodynamic Assoc., and the Sonoma Land Trust. Founded in 1974 by a small group of parents, it has grown today to serve over 400 children, from birth (parent-child classes) through 12th grade. I'm so proud to be a part of this community!
