Olympic Games

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the Olypmic Games on here. I was watching last night and a little this morning...
So far the US is doind very very well.

Phillips is Great!! Last I saw he had like 9 Gold medals and set a record as well as tieing a record. Very good!
We also had a woman get a gold...I forget her name think it was Soni...

The male gymnastics received a bronz but they were really awsome sticking the landings...cool.

The male vollyball team I think will win...they were really strong competitively against Italy. I won't be surprised if they got a gold too!

These are only what I was able to watch... I am sure there is more and more coming!!!

GO USA!!!

Re: Olympic Games

Could be something to do with China's treatment of Tibet? I understand that athletes strive for their lifetimes to get to the magnificence of physical perfection and it is wonderful and amazing. My problem is that it is a competition that encourages an us and them mentality, like "go U.S." vs "Go humanity" or "hurray for biology". Also , if one wanted, one could try and watch all the events, right now it seems like"all Olympics, all the time" in media land any way. I wonder what is going on behind all the hooplah that we are not seeing, how this focus obscures something critical which gets by with no notice...like we are already at war with Iran......Just my morning rant. Mindy Ps, the incredible swimmer's name is Phelps rather than Philips.

The Olympics appear to be another stage of war.
We cheer on the winners, reward them with gold and tell the losers to do better next time.
We pit nations against each other and pretend it is not political.
Not only do we keep track of how many medals a person wins, but also how many a nation wins.
It used to be US against Russia, now it is US against China.
Who is bigger and better?

Besides, I don't have a TV, not even one Made In China

Okay got me there I also spelled "doing" wrong...

Well, I like to keep the politics out of it and concentrate on the skills and abilities that the athletes have conqured... I know... noone else can. Yeah, there is a war, yeah, tibet has issues with china... Well, can't help where the Olympics got held. Why do you want to know what is going on behind the scenes? I tell you one thing... a little girl sang on opening cerimonies, and it wasn't her voice but a littler girl's voice... so what? That is china. That is how they have always been that is how they will continue to be. As long as there are no bombings planned like last time. It just seems stupid to me to want to take the focus off of why this event is happening to know how best it can be ruined..."behind the scenes"

I am very excited for our USA Teams that have worked 4 years diligently, constantly, determindly and with total focus to get there. Only a specialized few extrordinary men and women compete. We get to see the end result of their efforts and dedication to what they know they can do best!

Setting world records is a total freak to me. It means that they are the best, better best than anyone! Only one can say that when its all done! And they can say that for the rest of their lives!! That must be an awsome feeling of accomplishment!

I don't know...you people seem to critize and take the fun out of everything in exsistance.

"us or them mentality" ? Well that is what competition is! If you don't do it, they will, and everyone there has it; but I wouldn't go so far as to say they don't care about "humanity" It is a sport and sportsmanship.
Everyone there knows what everyone else there has gone through to be there, and I think for the most part the other countries have the same respect for US as the US competitors have for them...and they show it when the competition is over, sometimes they hug, sometimes the simply shake hands and congradulate the winners...as they should. In the end they are all still people. Picture yourself there... all the excitement, the aw in just being able to be apart of something that is a "world" event. Actually being one who wins a medal! Must be breath taking!

Having the "all Olympics all the time" is good cause that is what is happening now... and then I can see what I missed. I am sure that if the Olympics were not going on... It would just be "all war all the time" I need this break ... thanks...
And! I want to mention that this event only happens every four years and lasts for what two weeks? Geesh take a vacation...from war...

There is "war" in our own back yards...everyday...there are atrocities happening everyday in homes across the world.
Some people are just "bad" and cause others harm. Men beating women and children. Men killing their wives, friends whatever because they want the money or couldn't handle their anger...or wives killing their husbands because they were abusing them... People stealing from others...all kinds of bad stuff.
Bad stuff in politics too, no one has answers and it just goes round and round. What is that called...uh retoric?

Well think what you want... I am supporting the USA (and the other countries' competitors) in their endeavors to be the best and I want to see them when they are on the podium, the proudness they feel and being able to say, "See this medal? It means I have worked hard and with everything I have to be the best of the best. This is the proof!"

I live here in Sebastopol on property where I don't have television coverage. I have heard amazing accounts of the opening ceremony that included 2008 drums along with all the pagentry. If anyone knows where I can go - online? - to view that part of the Olympics, I would greatly appreciate it. I've tried the Google route but am not getting the video clip I mentioned above....
Cheers!

There is absolutely nothing you and I can do about the 'situation in China' ... nothing we can do about the world's situation except do the very best we can every day - help one another here...right here in our experience...and pray that beings begin to come to the realization we are all in this together and helping one another is the only 'right action' needed...(this sent with a loving heart).

I think the total focus is the problem. I am certain that the two weeks will pass and the dust will settle. I simply wonder what we in olympic dreamland will awaken to discover has happened in our names while we were not looking! I to am amazed at the ability coaxed from human anatomy in the physical realm, and the drive to do so. I lived in lala land in 84 when the olympics were there, near the crewing lake, and saw firsthand the influx of funds into the economy...down to the very bottom where hourly wages of $20.0 were given for parking cars etc. I see it as a boon to china, like a nod of agreement with their practices re tibet.

I am no sure I understand about whose "focus" you are talking about ...The athletes focus on their sucess in the games. Or that "everyone is totally focused" on the Olympic Games...

Thanks for not giving up on understanding. The focus is planetary wide, a diversion from and separate from all regular concerns. What are the people not playing or watching doing? What will we wake up and find has happened whilst we were otherwise occupied? With the masses busy it is a perfect time to slide something by. Something that undermines our rights and freedoms most likely and vests the power more firmly within the illuminated few.(Look for more threats to our safety from terrorists as a way to grow fear.) It is classic diversion.
I do not mean to take anything away from those involved in perfecting the human machine. Amazing, beautiful, cool. The fact is though, the whole experience is made into a national;istic frenzy, even while some bodies were born and raised soviet and now play on our team, etc. It is like "color war" at camp. Everyone takes sides and feels their group is superior though just moments before we were all members of the same group. Divisive. Instead of marveling at the majesty as a whole. It is war.
That is utter nonsense. The olympics have nothing to do with China and Tibet. It has to do with athletes. Period. Why are you trying to make it somthing else?
We as a country often use sanctions etc. as a means of influence. Gifting a country with all the funds generated by world event is tacit approval of their practices, which amount to genocide, imho. I promised my grandmother I would be on the lookout for such injustice, so that it could not happen again. I do not like to support, even tangentially, yet another genocide...
The athletes desire to perfect the instrument is a thing of beauty, I agree. I love to watch, though I have been sleeping sitting up late evening these days..mostly. What about olympics as a showcase rather than a competition? Cooperative endeavor. Humanity united to produce the ultimate conditioning. Twould be a beautiful thing, no?

There's a certain amount we can do in the short term to limit
the US government's support for the Chinese government and a lot
we'll be able to do in the long run by being ready to bring this country
to socialism when the gumbo hits the fan (around the same time
that water reaches $5 a gallon and gasoline is not available
at any price.) We have the power; we just need to use it.

Re: Olympic Games

Why is there so much talk about big, bad China and freeing Tibet while South Ossetia is struggling for its independence from Georgia?

The Georgian government brutally repressed and murdered over 1,500 South Ossetians recently. Where is the bruhaha over that?

Kosovo is well on its way to becoming an independent nation from Serbia because of ethnic cleansing. I think this is great to see an oppressed people gain their freedom.

Free Tibet! And free Kosovo! And free South Ossetia!

Re: Olympic Games

I am sorry but I have to speak up here. If you people wanted to start a thread about what could happen, or what might happen, or what if, or oh my....You should have.

That is not what I started talking about. I was talking about the Olympic Games.

Its been to days since it has been over and nothing got blown up or got news bigger than it happened...
Worry needlessly this time at this event NOW!!

(Cept what Edward reported that is...but that was good news, no?)

How about those closing ceremonies? Huh? Wow!! That took alot of people to make happen. Good thing China has alot of people in it!!

I thought the opening ceremonies were better than the closing... Although I didn't see the whole opening cers, I did see parts. Don't get me wrong they were both pretty spectacular!!! I just love fireworks!!

China got the most Gold medals, but America got the most medals!! Yay TEAM USA!!

Now on to the Conventions and Elections...and come what may. It was nice to see Edward Kennedy up an at em!
