Blankets Needed For the Homeless

To those in the Guerneville area:

Many people in Guerneville still don't know what the Mill Street Thrift Shop does: All the money goes to feed the homeless and any one else who is having a hard time making ends meet and can't buy food. Andrea, the tireless lady who runs the store also collects blankets for the homeless. We are in the midst of a cold spell when the night time temperatures are hovering around freezing. It's not just the homeless, the free wood program which used to supply wood in the winter for the disabled, elderly and others on very low incomes has been cancelled.

She needs blankets, men's pants especially size 34...she gives clothes to those who can't pay even her low prices. If, in the course of your own food shopping you can afford to buy a couple of extra cans of soup, a box or two of instant (add hot water) soups, any jarred pasta sauces, hot dogs, she could use all these things. She already gets bread on a daily basis and usually has large quantities of potatoes.

Do a little shopping too. I have gotten some really nice things from this shop...from a desk to suede jackets. If you have any clothes, kitchen ware, small appliances, clothes, etc. in good condition that you're no longer using, those will be appreciated too. They'll be sold and the money used to cook hot meals for the homeless and supply food to the hungry.

The Mill Street Thrift is located at 14075 Mill Street, between 4th and 5th Street, across the street from the post office in Guerneville, The phone # is 707-869-8393. Please make sure the shop is open to drop off donations. Things left outside the closed shop get rifled through and stolen.

I live in Santa Rosa and go to Guerneville frequently. I would be happy to pick up at homes in Santa Rosa and deliver for those who would like to send warm things but can't get to the river. Sandy 972-9371

You can also bring blankets and cold weather clothing, hats, gloves, etc. to the Sonoma County Task Force for the Homeless Winter Warmth center at 3315 Airway Drive SR (x Center St.) We are collecting items for distribution in the River area and other areas where homeless folks need them. Organizations including the Russian River Interfaith Coalition are coming by to pick up things for their clients. Call 575-4494 if you have questions or want to arrange to pick up for clients. Please do not send individuals to pick up items there.
