How many watering holes does Sebastopol need?

Walking around the Barlow today and saw signs for a new cidery across from the Crooked Goat, just down from the way from Seismic Brewing, next to a couple tasting rooms, and around the corner from the new Fern Bar down the ways from the distillery. Along with the Star, Hopmonk, and Main Street Saloon, sure looks like there are plenty of places to find a drink in Sebastopol. Maybe too many?

If they're successful, then the customers don't think there are too many, even though we might not agree.

Hey what a concept...Apples and the Barlow aka Hard Apple Cider! Love it, A cidery is a hard to the core idea and right up the alley for the ol Barlow Cannery. Can't wait to try a tasty scrumpy. Watering hole all the way! At one time in history people literally drank cider instead of water. I don't even think there is a cider only place yet any where around here. So... You can't even compare cider to just any thing So... Don't even try! Sebastopol is about everything apples. Hello

oh come on. It's pretty reasonable to question whether too many bars in an area impact the neighborhood. In fact, I think it's pretty indisputable they do - note they don't let them next door to schools, etc. I have plenty of sympathy for those who think an area's blighted by the availability of the demon rum -- not that the OP was asserting that.

Personally, though, I'm all for them. We're a long way from being Bourbon Street West.

You're so right! It's high time all these people start drinking alone.

    Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Let the private market determine how many drinking establishments are needed. If these places are legitimate businesses they will stay in business and if they fail then there are too many. Let the church ladies tend to the affairs of church, not saloons or tasting rooms.

Oh, maybe its not so far. The flood possibility is real, with competition price will come down and we can get more diverse, abundant tourists, and the cultural color is there, here, just need to bring out the cannery mosh of native, Latin, Philippine, okie, ect.

Well... I'm reminded of a line from one of my favorite authors- Edward Abbey... "Never trusta town with more churches then bars". And Seb is still loosing that battle.

I'm sorry- people have the right to relax and alter their conciousness however they like... as long as does not do harm or infringe on the rights of others.

So this boils down to- A) personal responsibility and B) the 3, in my opinion, establishments that are more then willing to overserve those who are incapable of personal resbonsibility.

In times of "Depression"... Watering holes, if you will... have soaring stocks. And these are those times, though few will admit it...

This is from someone who loves a good Pinot and or IPA, home brewed please...

On that note, since I see where we are and my "community" sulking and sinking from this... I am fasting as of a week... And until I see a clearing of safe Harbor...

    Sooooo...

Ok, anyone interested in Occidental Farmers "Bizarre"...??? posted article in bulletin board.

Re: How many watering holes does Sebastopol need?

I have wondered this question myself a couple of times.
I'm all for letting the market decide on this, but I wonder if there's a bubble occurring in the microbrewery industry.

A freshly made well crafted beer from quality ingredients will always be better than the commercial offerings. Recently (5-10yrs) lowered costs of equipment have spurned a MASSIVE increase in microbreweries. In 2013 Chicago was ranked 5th nationally with 62 breweries. In late 2018 Chicago was ranked #1 with 167! (LA was 5th this time with 146)

I think this has caused too many to make the attempt, and we will see a consolidation (you're already seeing it with national brands like Lagunitas) that will likely cause many of these guys to close. I mean, you can only be so different if your IPA's using the same hops as the guy next door (and the other guys 10, 15, & 30min away).
