    Envisioning our Future Together

The Vital Lands Initiative is a comprehensive plan that will guide our work for the next 15 years. Building on our 27+ years of successful land conservation work, the initiative will outline strategies for protecting our vital open space lands to preserve agriculture, natural resources, recreation, scenic vistas, greenbelt areas, and urban open space.

    PUBLIC MEETINGS
We appreciate your patience as we’ve paused the Vital Lands Initiative planning process to respond to the fires of last October. With the recovery and rebuilding process underway, we are turning our focus back to the comprehensive plan that will guide our work for the next 15 years. We hope you will join us at one of the following community meetings to review the draft plan:

    • Sat, Mar 17 – Community Church of Sebastopol | 10:00am – 12:00pm
    • Tues, Mar 20 – Bodega Bay Grange | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
    • Wed, Mar 21 – Petaluma Veterans Memorial Building | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
    • Thurs, Mar 22 – Finley Community Center, Person Senior Wing | 5:00pm – 7:00pm
    • Wed, Mar 28 – Healdsburg Villa Chanticleer | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
    • Thurs, Mar 29 – Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
We will make the draft plan available for review prior to the meetings.

    ONLINE FEEDBACK FORM

Individuals who are not able to make it to the public meetings can provide feedback online. Your input will be included with the comments received at the public meetings.
Provide us your feedback using the online form here >>

    PAST PUBLIC MEETINGS

The District completed a series of five initial public meetings in March asking the community to share their thoughts and ideas for the future of land conservation in Sonoma County, and the work of the District in particular. District staff provided an overview presentation before asking the community to provide their input via small group discussions and listening stations. District staff have incorporated this feedback into a draft plan to be shared with the public later this year.

    PAST THEMATIC WORKSHOPS

To gather additional input to help guide our comprehensive planning efforts, the District hosted a series of workshops inviting experts and stakeholders to provide detailed feedback on threats and potential strategies focused specifically on the following themes: natural resources; agriculture; greenbelts, community separators and scenic lands; and recreation and urban open space.

And here's the PD article on the Vital Lands Initiative:

    THE PRESS DEMOCRAT | March 17, 2018, 11:45PM

Sonoma County is making progress on its strategic vision for regional land-conservation efforts over the next decade and more, putting particular emphasis on agricultural lands, riparian corridors and properties that will one day become new public parks.

The county’s Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District recently released a draft plan to guide its work through 2031, laying out a variety of goals to preserve farmland, greenbelts, future recreational sites and other undeveloped swaths of the county. The district’s so-called vital lands initiative has already been informed by community meetings held last year, and officials are now turning to the public for another series of meetings over the next two weeks.
