Shepherd Bliss is a guest on KOWS Wise Woman Storytime Thursday, Sept. 28th from 12- 1pm

Every once in a while Wise Woman Storytime puts the spotlight on a wise elder man and we get to hear a personal story from his life. Such is the case this week. Local activist, farmer, and teacher Shepherd Bliss, a supporter of medical marijuana recently was part of a neighborhood action when it was discovered that 2 illegal industrial sized cannabis farms had sprung up overnight in his community defying environmental regulations, ignoring code requirements and just plain common decency and respect for all. The two farms were shut down by county officials within a few days.

These events have taken Shepherd on a path towards unraveling the complexities of how this now legal and potential billion dollar crop will be managed and enforced by government. It has motivated him to explore the environmental, political and cultural impact on the quality of life in rural communities and the ramifications of this industry for longtime small local growers as large corporations and rogue growers buy up land, begin large scale production and may process and distribute the cannabis in local neighborhoods as well.

While Shepherd’s story begins in a small rural neighborhood in west county, this is an issue that potentially affects our water safety and supply, our environment and the quality of life for everyone.

You can listen to the show live on KOWS radio this Thursday, September 28 from 12- 1pm at https://kows92-5.org/TiSkZ/ and on Tunein Radio at https://tunein.com/.

As always, all shows will be posted on https://robertatellerblog.com/ a few days after the show airs.

I'd have listened to it on KOWS radio had the citizens not stepped in to block the transmission antenna from being erected where it could broadcast to more than the town of Occidental.

I may be having a senior (non)memory moment, but isn't the neighborhood group that blocked the (permitted) antenna the same one that successfully got the (unpermitted) pot greenhouses in their neighborhood shut down?

As a community we have to recognize the impact of not only wine industrialization but the cannabis situation that is happening West County and I am sure all over. It seems like almost weekly there is a neighbor complaining about environmental damage from such grows. No one wants to take medicine away from anyone however, if you are using chemicals that add to the already 2 plus million pounds of chemicals the wine industry uses yearly here, expect rates like childhood cancer (we are tied for 3 in state) too increase. Hospice nurses are reporting cancer clusters in places like Glenn Ellen.

If you want to learn how to be proactive and know what is being sprayed in your area and how to get action, I suggest going to the Pam Strayer event, "What's on those Vines" at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, Oct. 21st, 1-3pm. She is the leading US specialist in organic/biodynamic wines, health writer and environmental watchdog. It's free to attend and she'll show you how to do all this online and easily. Attendees get a copy of her new wine list of the good guys. All this information applies to cannabis as well. Let's see if we can get the new industry to not poison us!
