Facebook’s new ‘Town Hall’ feature helps you find and contact your government reps

    Another tool for activism!

Facebook’s new ‘Town Hall’ feature helps you find and contact your government reps. It also makes it easier for you to call your representatives. -- TechCrunch article

"Here's a tip: People who've worked for Congress consistently say that phone calls, particularly to a member's home-state office, are more effective than tweets or emails." (quote from Chicago Tribune on the same topic.)

From Vanity Far: The new set of Facebook tools could be revolutionary, if they are widely adopted. Last month, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski shocked her colleagues when, after her office was flooded with calls from concerned constituents, she announced that she would oppose the nomination of Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. “I have heard from thousands, truly thousands, of Alaskans who shared their concerns,” she said on the Senate floor.

Even in a digital world, it still seems that real-life activism has a huge impact. There’s a chasm between digital activism—tweeting and making Facebook posts—and getting people into town hall meetings and into the streets. What Facebook is trying to do with its Town Hall tool could be a small step toward a bigger offline political footprint, just as its C.E.O., Zuckerberg, is growing more political himself. “I think we’re still in the beginning of seeing the power of social media for social good. I think this is an important first step that allows people to hold elected officials accountable, and more importantly allows elected officials and citizens to have a relationship,” McKesson explained. “In so many places, if you don’t physically visit the office, you don’t have a voice. This is another way to give people a voice, even if their bodies can’t show up.”
