Great Opportunity for West Sonoma County High School Students

Sebastopol, Calif. – Children’s Humanitarian International (CHI) today announced that participants in the 2017 CHI Summer Abroad program – whose application period is open through Friday, January 27 – will be eligible to receive up to three Santa Rosa Junior College credits transferable to California State University campuses.

“Beginning this year, participants in our Summer Abroad program will be eligible for this great benefit – college credit – on top of the opportunity to experience Africa in a way that few other people, let alone American high school students, are able to do,” said Jordan Burns, CHI founder and executive director. To be awarded these transferable credits, CHI Summer Abroad participants will be required to write three papers and make daily journal entries.

The CHI Summer Abroad program takes a small group of carefully selected Sonoma County high school students to Kenya for a five-week program that includes working on projects at the CHI Academy, taking classes on topics including the history of Kenya (including its colonial past), agriculture systems, health education, global humanitarian awareness and service, and Swahili, East Africa’s lingua franca. CHI Summer Abroad participants also travel to a variety of cultural and humanitarian sites including Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley, Kibera Slums, Menengai Crater, and a safari in Maasai Mara National Reserve (part of the same world-famed ecosystem found in Tanzania’s adjacent Serengeti National Park).

CHI is accepting applications from ALL current Sonoma County high school students through January 27. Qualified CHI Summer Abroad participants are eligible for both merit-based and financial need-based scholarships.

Last year, more than half of the participants were from West Sonoma County Union High School District.
