Sonoma County Republican Party endorses Tom Lynch for 5th District supervisor

Sonoma County Republican Party endorses Tom Lynch for 5th District supervisor

Sonoma County’s Republican Party is backing Tom Lynch in the race to replace Efren Carrillo on the Board of Supervisors.

Lynch, a registered Democrat and fiscal watchdog, welcomed the endorsement.

“I’m a proud Democrat who is proud to get the support of the Republican Party,” said Lynch, 58. “If anyone has a problem with that, then don’t vote for me.”

Lynch is one of five candidates seeking the 5th District seat on the Board of Supervisors, which includes Roseland, Sebastopol and the county’s coastline. The other candidates are Noreen Evans, 61, an attorney and former state Senator; Lynda Hopkins, 33, an organic farmer; Tim Sergent, a special education teacher; and Marion Chase, a county social services worker.

    The election is June 7.

Lynch, a longtime west county resident and general contractor who has served as Carrillo’s appointee on the county’s Planning Commission since 2009, is a vocal critic of the county’s spending on employee pensions. After moves in the past decade to enrich benefits for retirees, those annual costs for taxpayers have risen more than 500 percent since 2000 to $113 million.

“I’m seeing more and more money go to unfunded retirement obligations and no longer funding basics like roads and infrastructure,” Lynch said. “We have to reinvent local government and restore all of these services that the county once provided.”

Edelweiss Geary, chairwoman of the local Republican Party, said Lynch gained the organization’s support because of his deep roots in the district and his experience on the Planning Commission.

“He also has some pretty solid conservative, common-sense opinions on how to run this county,” Geary said. “The entire Board of Supervisors is pretty liberal, so it’d be nice to elect someone to counter that.”

Re: Sonoma County Republican Party endorses Tom Lynch for 5th District supervisor

Very interesting that the Republican's choice in the 5th District Supervisor race is Tom Lynch. This is the same person who has fed this entire online community with one issue...pensions. While at the same time using a straw man fallacy towards Noreen Evans. Just because pensions are not Noreen's number one priority, doesn't mean she isn't in favor of getting the county's budget under control.

I have said from the beginning that Tom Lynch is a shill for Lynda Hopkins. At the very least, Tom has been quoted numerous times agreeing with Lynda, backing Lynda on issues, and has used his campaign to attack Noreen so that Lynda can appear to be running a 'clean' campaign.

Now given the fact the Republicans feel pensions are the biggest issue facing our supervisor race and have chosen Lynda Hopkins' attack dog as their candidate, perhaps we can move on from this one issue and focus on which candidate will better serve our environment, infrastructure, affordable housing, and many other very important issues that no one seems to care about. A lot of people have just been duped by the Republican's choice!

Tom should be proud that he is endorsed by the same organization, the Sonoma county GOP, that endorsed and will be working for Trump.

Things have got wickedly strange. Here is the evidence. https://www.sonomacountygop.org/2016-election/

Speaking of pensions, can someone validate or discredit this piece of news I received days ago? That a supervisor turning 62 is retiring, with an annual pension of $250,000? The person who told me is very reliable, but in this case did not cite a source I could use for follow up. Thanks anyone who knows....dg

Pensions are an important issue that Noreen has been unwilling to talk about. Her solutions to the housing crisis are just what's being done now plus rent control, both proven to be ineffective. Her road funding solution is increasing taxes on medical pot, what? Her environmental platform similar to the others. I really worry what she would do about roseland. How much would she be willing to pay Santa Rosa to annex?

Your analysis of election strategy is nonsensical. If Lynch really wanted to help hopkins he would not have run. It's clear to me he has integrity and is running for the reasons he states. Evans says she is running to give regular people a voice in policy making, yet her policy choices are the least challenging to current policy.
