These Anti-Vaccine Parents Were Found Guilty in the Death of Their Toddler

An Alberta couple has been found guilty of failing to provide their son with the necessaries of life, four years after he died of bacterial meningitis. The parents, whose preference for natural remedies over traditional medicine is said to have caused the child's death, could spend up to five years in jail.

David and Collet Stephan were charged a year after their 19-month old son Ezekiel died in March, 2012. The six-week trial concluded on Monday, with the jury, who were instructed by the judge not to make their decisions based on "sympathy, prejudice or fear," wrapping up deliberations in Lethbridge, Alberta in just two days.

The Stephans will be back in court on June 13, when a date will be set for their sentencing.

During the trial, the defence painted the couple as responsible parents who weren't aware of how ill their son was, while the Crown argued that the Stephans didn't do enough to make sure he received the medical care he needed.

Ezekiel had already been sick for over two weeks with what his parents believed was croup and the flu when suddenly he stopped breathing, prompting his parents to call an ambulance...

The headline seems to indicate that the child died because he wasn't vaccinated, but here's the rest of the story, for those who haven't read to the end. I've recently read reports of babies suffering and dying after being vaccinated. For anyone who's interested, they're easy enough to find. For those who don't "question" vaccines, and prefer to trust the CDC to have your best interests at heart, hope your children and grand children don't go through the agonies that vaccine toxins have produced in so many, that the lawsuit awards are in the billions. Don't believe me, do your research or accept control over your body and those of your loved ones. The vaccine line welcomes you, and it's easy to find. CVS will even give you 20% off your shopping bill. What a deal!

"According to the official death report, however, the toddler had been suffering bacterial meningitis and neurological dysfunction.The day before he stopped breathing, the toddler had to lie on a mattress while travelling to a naturopath's office because he was too stiff to sit in a car seat.
But defence lawyer Shawn Buckley said during closing arguments that not a single witness called by either side who had seen the little boy before he was taken to hospital thought he needed immediate medical attention, the Canadian Press reported.
The Stephans have said they were shocked by the charges, which they believe were laid because the Crown wanted to make an example of them for not vaccinating their kids. Ezekiel had never been vaccinated, and neither have the Stephans' three other children.

It's unfortunate that the headline insinuates the parents were convicted because they are vaccine deniers. They were convicted "of failing to provide the necessaries of life" by denying medical care to their son who had been horribly sick with meningitis for weeks. So sick that he was too stiff to travel in a car seat when they went to a lawyer to sign papers and had to be transported on a mattress in the back of the familys truck. This story is obviously devastating, no parent should have to deal with the death of their child. However David and Collet Stephan had multiple opportunities to seek appropriate medical treatment for Ezekiel and chose not to. The Registered nurse Collet had visit the home advised them that Ezekiel appeared to have meningitis and to consult a physician, and the naturopath they did consult testified in court that they were told to take Ezekiel to the emergency room right away and they failed to do so. Ezekiel was the victim of his parents medical negligence, thats why they were convicted.

Buckley (lawyer) told the jury not a single witness who had seen Ezekiel prior to the 911 call thought he was in need of medical attention.
A friend of the Stephans, who is a registered nurse, testified during the trial that she told the mother the boy might have viral meningitis and advised he be taken to a doctor.
Buckley said Collet Stephan would have taken Ezekiel to a doctor if there had been any "red alert" emergency.
"A doctor's not always called when a child has a typical illness," said Buckley, noting that a number of witnesses indicated detecting bacterial meningitis can be a "tricky thing."

Buckley also pointed to the testimony of Alberta's former chief medical officer who disputed the cause of death.

Dr. Anny Sauvageau told court she believed the toddler died of viral meningitis — not the bacterial form — and that he might have lived had the ambulance to nearby Cardston been better equipped to treat a child his age with breathing difficulties.

Well, the Crown and the jury did not find the Stephans and their defense convincing. They found them guilty because of their failure to seek professional medical assistance for Ezekiel even after being told do so by other medical professionals. And although vaccines are available (at no charge as this is Canada) that help protect from contracting viral and bacterial meningitis, their denying Ezekiel this protection had nothing to do with why they were tried and convicted. This case was about their failure to provide Ezekiel with medical care after he became ill, in spite of multiple opportunities and the obvious need of their severely ill child.
