A friend who is writing about the wine industry's over-use of our limited water supply sent the following link to an article, which has a lot of merit.

Big Wine is not as bad as Big Almond and Big Lifestock among the Big Ag over-users of our limited water supply, but here in the North Coast they are a major contributor to a pending disaster. We need to take direct action, in my opinion, to confront Big Ag, which uses 80% of California's water.
Irrigating wine only began with drip irrigation in the l970s. We have had good wine for centuries without irrigation. We need to demand that wineries dry farm. This does not work for all soils, which means that grapes should not be planted where they need intense irrigation.
Water-deprived people end up dying, or engaging in drastic actions to get the water that their survival requires. Now is the time to act, by confronting Big Wine, or it may soon be a more drastic situation.
