The Mr. Music Foundation is presenting the Zombie Ball on Halloween at the Sebastopol Community Center. This will be a fantastically fun event that includes the requisite costume party, and dancing to The Rhythm Rangers and Gator Nation. But besides all that fun, it will also be a benefit for the Palm Drive Health Care Foundation and their Open Our Hospital campaign that, like Zombies, continues to continue.

Palm Drive Hospital closed in April under the weight of its own unsustainable business model. Under the direction of the Palm Drive Board of Directors the plug was pulled on a patient that had been hemorrhaging for years. This action caused much gnashing of teeth, hand wringing and finger pointing, but that patient need to be mercifully put down.

However, a determined public, led by the Palm Drive Health Care Foundation, has vowed to bring the Hospital back from the dead. The “Open Our Hospital” signs began appearing on hundreds of lawns, on road signs and pretty much everywhere you looked in Sebastopol. Even though road signs will not open our hospital, I certainly appreciate the efforts of the Foundation to create a model that will work for our community, and will restore basic services including an emergency room. The fact that so many people are interested in making that happen, gives me courage and faith that it will, indeed, rise from the dead.

The Halloween, Zombie Ball is not intended to raise money to reopen the hospital, as this event would only be a small drop in the very large bucket, but it will give folks a place to come and cheer on the efforts of those at the Palm Drive Health Care Foundation that have been working for years to keep the hospital up and running. Great and wise men and women have been working tirelessly with doctors, community leaders and business people to find a model that is both sustainable and ultimately, profitable. Police, Fire and emergency workers have been especially supportive of reopening the emergency room, because they know the importance of getting care to trauma victims quickly. With all this community support, all these great minds working together, and all the determination and dedication of the Palm Drive Health Care Foundation and the Board of Directors, we CAN bring the hospital back from the dead.
