If you can't resist getting a new dog during the holidays there are certain things you should do to insure a
good transition. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Exercise, exercise, exercise… They also need a lot of mental stimulation..

2. Your dog will need to have consistent, calm and assertive leadership every day...
he needs to be told what to do. Once he knows the rules and follows them, then you
can start being affectionate. Shelter dogs often don’t have the benefit of consistent rules.
Set limits, dogs love this. Once they know you are in control they will relax.

3. When you feed him make sure he is calm and submissive first. Make him work for it. Sits and waits
are important before being fed.

4. Ignore behavior you don’t want.. Only give attention when you are getting the behavior you want.

5. Rules, boundaries and limitations. Set up the house so that he can only go in certain rooms.
Give him his own space by himself that is quiet and away from the busy area. Crates are good,
doing but don’t use this as punishment.

6. Velcro him to you (using a 6 foot leash) for 5 days (as much a possible). Where ever you go –he goes.
This is very bonding and provides structure.

And PLEASE adopt from shelters and rescues. These dogs will be especially grateful and often make
the best pets.
